Showtime’s Dexter is pay cable’s hottest (and best) show. The show is based on the unusual (and fascinating) premise of following the life of a serial killer named Dexter (played brilliantly by Michael C. Hall.)

What makes it particularly unusual is that we are see events unfold through the perspective of Dexter. While he is “the bad guy” in any conventional sense, he’s also the character that we (the audience) are meant to relate to.

I think one of the things that makes the show really interesting and one of the ways that people who are not serial killers (hopefully everyone watching) can relate to Dexter is that he lives a “double life.” One secret life as a serial killer that he cannot share with anyone and then another public life as a forensics specialist for the Miami police department (yes that’s another great twist, he works for the police and sometimes investigates his own crimes.)

In a sea of boring average television, Dexter is a show worth watching. I highly recommend buying the season 1 & season 2 DVDs now and catching up with the show (it’s now on season 3.) This is a show that needs to be watched in order (without an episode missed) as it’s a story that builds one episode to the next with story arcs that last all season (and which effect the next seasons as well.)

The show is based on the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. He has written a whole series of books on Dexter but the show’s plot diverges considerably from the books except in the case of season 1 which does follow Darkly Dreaming Dexter (the first book) pretty closely (although with some important changes.)
