Food Inc.

The next new really important documentary that you need to see is Food Inc. It’s playing in theaters now but if you can’t find it playing at a theater near you (it’s not playing at the mall here) then you will need to track it down once it comes out on DVD. This is something that every American should see. Ignorance is not bliss.

Our distorted food system is making us sick while making virtual “slaves” of farmers.

Did you know that as of right now 1 in 3 Americans born after the year 2000 is likely to get diabetes during their lifetime? If you don’t think that’s a warning sign that there’s something significantly wrong with the garbage the food industry is calling food, then you need your head examined.

Did you know that farmers usually have to go into huge amounts of debt just so they can make a measly return all while having very little say over their own farms? It’s because the food industry has all of the power now. Not farmers.

Did you know that corn production is subsidized by the government? This leads to cows eating corn instead of grass (which makes them sick which leads to human sickness) and also leads to junk food (which filled with processed corn) being cheaper than the foods we should be eating (vegetables.)

I’m not telling you about this so you can join me in complaining about this system. I’m telling you about this because we can change the course of the future by making new choices and by spreading this information to everyone we can. Knowledge is power. Ignorance is slavery.

We “vote” on how our food is produced with every meal we eat. The absolute best thing you can do is to vote for locally grown food. If you are lucky enough to have a store which sells locally grown food, go there instead of the big box grocery store. If you are lucky enough to have a farmer’s market nearby – go there whenever you can. If there’s a co-op you can join then do that. Many of us have other options if we seek them out.
