The Pink Floyd Discovery Box Set
All serious Pink Floyd fans are excited about the new remastered box sets coming out this year and next. First off in September there is the release of the 16 disc remastered studio album box set which is being called the “Discovery” Box Set. The Beatles remastered box sets proved that these new digital remasters of classic rock albums could significantly improve the sound quality of the CDs so I’m very excited to hear these new Pink Floyd remasters of all fourteen of their studio albums. Click Here to pre-order the Discovery Box Set now.
But I’m probably even more excited about the “Immersion” box sets for The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. These box sets include not only the remastered version of the studio album itself but also extra discs which include alternate mixes, alternate versions, and live recordings (audio & video.) They also contain some fun exclusive stuff like coasters, artwork, and scarves (yes, scarves.)
All of these box sets can be pre-ordered on Amazon.com (and don’t worry; if the price drops before shipping you will get the new lower price.)
My Favorite Pink Floyd Albums
(#1) The Dark Side of the Moon
Not an “original” choice as this is probably the band’s most popular album. But just because something is a popular choice doesn’t mean it’s not the best choice! And in my opinion this album deserves all of the popularity that it has. It’s possibly the closest thing to a “perfect” album that’s ever been recorded.
(#2) The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Not many Floyd fans are likely to have these two albums sitting side by side but I love the early Syd Barrett lead Floyd and I also love the ’70s Floyd sound. In many ways this is the work of an entirely different band although certainly there are some elements that tie it together. Like all of the rest of the band’s albums; a remastered CD version of this brilliantly inventive psychedelic album is included in The Discovery Box Set.
(#3) Wish You Were Here
Following up an album as amazing as The Dark Side of the Moon is not an easy thing to do but Pink Floyd did so in style with this brilliant album which to some fans is even better.
(#4) Animals
1977′s Animals is sandwiched between the better known (and bigger selling) The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall. Unfortunately it’s too often overlooked. While I don’t think the songs on this album are as strong as those on my favorite three Floyd albums there is still some extraordinary music on this album. Hear it in its all of its remastered glory as a part of the Discovery Studio Album Box Set.
(#5) Meddle
Many fans love this album mostly because of the 20+ minute track “Echoes” that closes the album, but I’m actually more into the first half (although “Echoes” can be a wonderful experience and it really does sync up with 2001: A Space Odyssey… unlike the DSotM/Wizard of Oz thing which is just a coincidence.) Any which way; it’s a great album and it is (of course) included in The Pink Floyd Discovery Box Set!
